Attila the Hen, Radio 4
Labels:
chicken obsession
or should it be called: When having chickens becomes an obsession?
I have just listened to this wonderful radio program and it made me laugh and laugh...oh so good to know we are not alone in our chicken madness. If you have time, have a listen (link here). You'll hear about a woman who went from having 4 chickens to 50 and whose husband now goes on holidays alone (!!); another woman who took her chooks to her Mum's place for Christmas (not for lunch obviously!); and a guy who walks 12 kms a day to feed some chooks who live on a roundabout (the number got to a few hundred! No really!! I mean roundabouts are big over here but that's unbelievable!). Seriously happy listening

Loved the programme. Think we may now have to get some more chooks!!
Hi
Have just listened to your programme, which was of course fun. However, I am sorry that you didn't feel moved to consecrate just a little time to some more serious comments. It is interesting to hear some comments on the symbolic significance of chickens. But what about the science? As long ago as 1999 researchers in Australia reported that chickens use up to 30 different calls to refer to things in their environment. You might want to consult Jonathan Balcome's book 'Second Nature' regarding the emotions that chickens exhibit.
Do you detect a certain (and I hope very mild) testiness in what I am saying? Well if you do, I apologise unreservedly, as I have no wish to add to the general mass of negativity one finds in the world. However, I do hope you consider carefully how far you might have sacrificed a more objective, up to date and interesting approach by adding a little too much of the 'How mad are these chicken lovers' and 'Aren't we all wondeful eccentrics at heart?'. Just a thought.
Tim
